New Years!

Sorry for my long hiatus and lack of blog up-keeping. I don’t want to get too deep into it, but on New Years Day, tragedy struck: my 6 year old cousin was in the hospital. It was discovered that she has a brain tumor. Thankfully, she’s doing okay for now.

But now that I’m on my groove for the new years, I’ve got a lot of exciting things coming! Can’t say too much now, so you’ll just have to wait and see! Stay patient and I will again get back on track with my art tuesdays and review of the week.

In the meantime, check out some of my new images from a recent shoot! More to come!

Art Tuesdays: Sam Spratt

Sam Spratt is an amazing digital artist who is most notorious for the new artwork for Angry Birds. His work ranges from hysterically funny to serious subjects that either voice his opinion or pay tribute to certain subjects, such as the twin towers image below. What is amazing though, is that all of these images are digitally painted, yet look like real oil paintings! As well, they are quite realistic. Check out more of his work here. Also read his blog, he’s got a great sense of humor as well. I would definitely hire him to make my movie posters!

Enjoy!

Review of the Week: Another Earth (2011)

Sorry for the late post – had some website difficulties!

Directed by: Mike Cahill
My Rating: 4 Stars
Rotten Tomatoes: 63%

Another Earth is an independent film starring Brit Marling and William Mapother. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, this film received a ton of support and attention due to it’s mindblowing plot. The film is about another Earth (quite literally) being discovered in the solar system. The night that this twin planet is discovered, Rhoda Williams, our main character, receives an acceptance letter to MIT. However, she celebrates a little too much and gets behind the wheel drunk, leading to catastrophic consequences for both her life, and the life of a Yale composer. The film then plays out showing how both their lives have been impacted, as well as the continuing discoveries of this second Earth. There are a few parts of the film that are a little slow, but the film finishes with bang, leaving you thinking about the film for days afterwards.

Check out the trailer below, and definitely watch the film!

Apologies…

Hey guys! Sorry I haven’t been able to post my review of the week. I had been having some problems with both my blog and my website and spend some time trying to fix it.

Now that it’s back up and running, I will be posting the review today to catch up! Keep tuned!

Meanwhile, I leave you with this really cool animation by Erica Haowei Hu. I especially love the music! Enjoy!

Art Tuesdays: M.C. Escher

M.C. Escher was a master of impossibility. He was fascinated with the rules of mathematics and physics, but more importantly, he was fascinated with breaking the rules, which inspired some of his most famous pieces. A lot of his images are optical illusions, such as the famous penrose steps below (mentioned in the film Inception). Others are more wildly imaginative, with a complete disregard for how we are used to perceiving the world. Escher asks us, “What if?”

Enjoy!

Review of the Week: Super 8 (2011)

Directed by: JJ Abrams
My Rating: 5 stars
Rotten tomatoes: 82%

Can I just say what an amazing team JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg make?!

I first saw this film on the flight back from Australia. Unfortunately, my headphones were broken and I could only hear out of one ear. Such a shame considering the amazing music composed for the film, by Michael Giacchino. The film is very well constructed, keeping you constantly guessing at what’s going to happen. With both funny and heartfelt dramatic moments, this is a movie that keeps you glued from start to end.

The movie is about Joe, a young boy who has recently lost his mother in a work-related accident. Set in 1979, Joe helps his friends to make a super 8 film to enter into a contest but while filming they witness a train accident. Suddenly the town is flooded with Air Force personnel and they are forced to question: What if this wasn’t just a train crash?

The film is also a great tribute to the super 8 film medium. I bought this film and showed it to my dad and afterwards he bombarded me with stories of all the movies he used to make as a kid, using 8mm film (the same format Spielberg used, before super 8 was made). Great for both past generations and current generation, this film is a tribute to the mediums of the past as well as the mediums of the future. It shows how far we have come, from kids stealing their parents cameras and waiting a week to see the footage to the current and very easily attained filmmaking availabilities.

I highly encourage you to see this film if you have not already.

Also, for further enjoyment, here is a TED talk by JJ Abrams. He is very inspiring and quite hilarious.

Art Tuesdays: Audrey Kawasaki

Audrey Kawasaki has taken the art world by storm with her unique, manga and anime inspired art. Both innocent and provocative, her art is usually oil paint on wood, sometimes with additional mediums, such as graphite or colored pencil, added. She is one of the few who is capable of making a living off her art and she has been featured in numerous magazines and articles (including this one!). Occasionally she makes wood cutouts of her art and I definitely want one hanging on my wall!

Check out her website here and enjoy a few of my favorites of hers below!

My absolute favorite:

A stunning cut-out!
